In a handwritten letter, electronically scanned copies of which were e-mailed to the media by the detained US Marine's lawyer, Smith expressed his gratitude to strangers who sent him treats on Christmas Day and the past weeks. It was not clear if the lawyers had also -emailed the letter to other people. "To all the people who took their time out to send me a card, write me a letter, or drop off a gift over these past couple of weeks. Thank you so much. These things have made the holidays a memorable time. From me and my family, thank you all and God Bless," said the letter. Smith penned the note on his 22nd day at the Makati City Jail (MCJ) upon the advice of his lawyers. The 21-year-old Marine has gained a fan base in the Philippines, among them Filipino wives of American servicemen and expatriates, since he was sent to the MCJ after he was convicted on Dec. 4 of raping a Filipino woman on Nov. 1, 2005 |

| Bora February 28, 2007 09:42 PM PST I support Daniel Smith also... The support i offer is for him to be fairly treated in Jail for the next 20-40 years. Rapists do deserve to be treated fairly... by the court system and the penal system.. I hope they keep him safe and well protected behind bars. afterall.. noone in there desreves to be raped either...... even a convicted rapist.. But keeping him safe in a Philippine Jail wont be easy... nor will it be easy in a U.S jail... either way... I offer my support of a safe environment... even for Murderers or Rapists. | ||

| josh January 14, 2007 03:58 AM PST dude u r such a waste (or in tagalog, sayang ka). i'm one of those people who highly doubt nicole's claims. if i'm as good looking as you i would choose a pretty girl. what made you like her, dan???she doesnt even look lovely. and as for your lawyers, they kinda suck! why didnt they even contest the judge's verdict the moment it was handed down???all they do was fight for the custody, which is only secondary compared to a conviction. why can't you even fight for yourself? why didnt you make a calibrated statement to the public to explain your side of the story? oh well, i guess it's too late for that now. it really is gut wrenching to be labelled as "convicted rapist" all over the newspapers, especially to your parent's eyes. and look at you, dude. you are just 21. i just turned 26 last month. when i was your age, i was busy graduating. and now just one impulsive act and your life turned completely upside down. (sigh) it's really sad. i feel for you, dude. for you and your family. just do whatever fr reuters tell you. he's a kind and wise priest and he can get you through all this s--t. i wish you the best of luck in your appeal. don't ever lose hope, bro. you know it's the only thing you have right now. | ||
